Day 1 (Jinja/Kampala to Murchison Falls NP +/- 6 hours)

Our journey begins through the fertile farmland of southern and central Uganda with its busy trading centres and roadside markets.  Gradually you will notice the scenery changing to Acacia woodland and papyrus swamps as we head north to the Kafu river. After we cross the Kafu we turn left to Masindi where we will stop briefly to stretch our legs before heading off the tarmac road and onto the dirt roads of Murchison Falls NP.  After we enter the park we will first travel through the ancient Budongo forest with its baboons, chimps, colobus monkeys, birdlife and butterflies. This is the location for our chimpanzee trek, a walk of two to five hours with a 90% chance of seeing these wonderful cousins of ours in the oldest remaining forest in East Africa.  The chimpanzee trekking guides here are trained by the Jane Goodall Institute and are the best in the business with a strong bond to ‘their’ chimps. Once clear of the forest we will reach the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley, with Murchison Falls NP before you, as far as the eye can see.  Gradually the forest thins to woodland and the woodland to scrub and there is a chance we will see Uganda kob, buffalo, hartebeest and elephant as well as many bird species, particularly the iridescent forest kingfishers. In the early evening we will arrive out our lodge campsite.  The camp is set in peaceful Acacia woodland and has fantastic shared facilities as well as access to the spectacular lodge and swimming pool.  If you take the full-board option, dinner will be served at the lodge and if you self cater you are free to use one of the cooking areas.

Day 2 (Murchison Falls NP)

An early wakeup and full breakfast (full-board) before heading to Paraa (‘place of Hippos’) to cross the Nile for our morning game drive in search of lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hyena, hartebeest and more.  We will spend around 4 hours driving around the rolling savannah, riverine forest and marshland of the northern section of Murchison Falls NP before returning to Paraa.  For the self catering option you have the choice of your own food or taking at lunch at the Red Chilli restcamp and for full-board customers we will return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch we return to Paraa and the Wild Frontiers launch to take us to the foot of Murchison Falls. It take around an hour and a half to reach the falls and on the way we’ll scour the riverbanks, together with your first rate, highly experienced guide, for wildlife.  You will see hippos and crocodiles naturally and a wide variety of spectacular waterbirds and on the banks there’s a chance of seeing buffalo, warthog, elephant and various antelope.  Once at the foot falls we moor briefly to a large rock to wonder at the power of the mighty river before slowly drifting back down into the late afternoon sun, contemplating the explorers and adventurers who saw what we are seeing now.  We return to Paraa in the early evening where our driver will be waiting to take us back to our campsite.  For full board customers, dinner will again be served in the lodge, and for self catering you can again use the facilities on the campsie to cook or your driver will help you find some local food in the village. Please note: We will be camping outside the park but baboons, monkeys and warthogs do not respect either park boundaries or tent canvass.  If you leave food of any kind in your tent there is a chance that they will destroy the tent to get at it. In such an event you will be charged for the damage.

Day 3 (Murchison Falls NP to Jinja/Kampala via Lake Albert)

After breakfast and packing up camp we will leave Murchison Falls and head on to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for our rhino trek. This is a great opportunity to see these magnificent beasts on foot in a controlled natural environment where the Rhinos are free to roam within the huge sanctuary but are guarded 24/7. The fee you pay goes 100% to Rhino Fund Uganda, in support of their work to establish a viable Rhino population here so the underthreat Rhino can be reintroduced into Ugandas national parks.  We will then continue our journey south, arriving in Kampala or Jinja in the early evening.

Uganda is generally hot and sunny during the day so sunscreen and a hat are a good idea, but it does get chilly at night so a light jacket/jumper is also advisable.

There is no power supply in the wilderness so please charge you cameras and phones to the brim before departure.

Spending money for additional activities.  There are no banks where we’re going!
